Important questions based on NCERT syllabus for Class 7 Chapter 2 - Linear Equations in One Variable:
Question 1: Divide Rs.500 among three workers in such a way that each worker will get in the ratio of 2 : 3 : 5. Find the share of each person.
Share of each person is 2x, 3x and 5x
Total share 2x + 3x +5x = 500
10x = 500
x = 50
Share of first person = 2x =Rs. 100
Share of second person = 3x =Rs. 150
Share of third person = 5x =Rs. 250
Question 2: Three numbers are in the ratio 4 : 5 : 6. If the sum of the largest and the smallest equals the sum of the second and 55, find the numbers.
Let the numbers be 4x, 5x and 6x.
4x + 6x = 5x + 55 [Given]
10x = 5x + 55
5x = 55
x = 11
So, numbers are, smallest number = 4x = 44
Largest number = 6x = 66
Other number = 5x = 55
Question 3: Rakesh is twice as old as Vijay. Five years ago his age was three times Vijay’s age. Find their present ages.
Let us take Vijay’s present age to be x years.
Then Rakesh’s present age would be 2x years.
Vijay’s age five years ago was (x – 5) years.
Rakesh’s age five years ago was (2x – 5) years.
It is given that Rakesh’s age five years ago was three times Vijay’s age.
Thus, 2x – 5 = 3(x – 5)
2x – 5 = 3x – 15
15 – 5 = 3x – 2x
10 = x
So, Vijay’s present age = x = 10 years.
Therefore, Rakesh’s present age = 2x = 2(10) = 20years.
Question 4: A grandfather is ten times older than his granddaughter and he is 63 years older than her. Find their present ages.
Let the present age of grandfather = 10x
Age of granddaughter = x
10x - x = 63 [Given]
9x = 63
x = 7
Age of granddaughter = 7
Age of grandfather = 10x = 70 years
