Question-1: What are saprophytes and their mode of nutrition?

Solution: Saprophytes are generally fungi or micro-organisms. The organisms which obtain their nutrition from dead and decaying organic matter are called as saprophytes. Saprophytes secrete digestive juices (Enzymes) like cellulases, proteases and lipases onto dead and decaying matter to dissolve it and then absorb nutrients from it. These organisms extend their mycelium and secrete enzymes to digest the decaying matter. E.g. mushroom and non-photosynthetic plants, such as Indian pipe and
gnome plant.

Question-2: Why is sun said to be an ultimate source of energy?

Solution: Sun is the ultimate source of energy as all organisms obtain their food from plants and plants obtain energy from sun during photosynthesis. The energy present in coal and petroleum are also from sun.

Question-3: What is Nutrition and give the names of major nutritive components?

Solution: The process of taking in food and using it for growth, metabolism and repair is called nutrition. Energy is needed for any organism to work, grow and reproduce. The main nutritive components are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
