Important questions based on NCERT syllabus for Chapter 7 - Getting to Know Plants:

Question-1: Explain herbs and shrubs?

Solution: Plants with green and tender stem are called herbs. They are usually short and may not have many branches. Some plants have the stem branching out near the base. The stem is hard but not very thick. Such plants are called shrubs.

Question-2: What is a stem? Explain its functions?

Solution: The stem is the central axis to which all other parts are attached. In most of the plants the stem is above the ground, but in some species they are hidden below the ground. It supports the leaves, flowers and fruits and connects them with the roots. In trees and Shrubs, the main stem or trunk provides a strong structure from which branches are attached, raising the leaves upward to be exposed more fully to the sun. It also conducts water, nutrients and the products of photosynthesis to and from roots and leaves.

Question-3: Are the roots in some plants edible?

Solution: The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and the stem conducts these to leaves and other parts of the plant. The leaves prepare food. This food travels through the stem and is stored in different parts of a plant. We eat some of these roots like carrot, radish, sweet potato, turnip and tapioca. We also eat many other parts of a plant where the food is stored.
