Important questions based on NCERT syllabus for Class 11 Chapter 14 - Mathematical Reasoning:

Question 1: Identify the following statements are negation of each other.

i) The number x is not a rational number.
The number x is not an irrational number

i) The number x is a rational number.
The number x is a irrational number

Solution:

i) The negation of the first statement is " The number x is not a rational number" which is same as the second statemnet because if the number is not rational then it is irrational

ii) The negation of the first statement is " The number x is not an irrational number" which is same as the second statemnet because if the number is not irrational then it is rational.

Therefore the pairs are negation of each other.

Question 2: Find the compund statements in the following compound statements and check whether it is true or false.

i) 99 is divisible by 3, 33, 99

ii) A square has 4 side and all side are of different lenght and width

iii) If x is natural number the it should contain '0'

iv) The diagonals of the rectangles are equal

Solution:

i) 99 is divisible by 3, 33, 99 - It is True compound statement

ii) A square has 4 side and all side are of different lenght and width - it is false compound statement

iii) If x is natural number the it should contain '0' - false compound statement

iv) The diagonals of the rectangles are equal - True compound statement

Question 3: For each of the following statements identitfy the connecting words and then break it into compound statements

i) A square has 4 side and all 4 sides are Equal

ii) The sum of two natural numbers may be positive or negative

iii) If 20 is a divisor of 100 and 10 is a divisor of 100

Solution:

AND
The compound statements are
A square has 4 side
all 4 sides are Equal

OR
The compound statements are
The sum of two natural numbers may be positive
The sum of two natural numbers may be negative

IF-Then
20 is a divisor of 100
10 is a divisor of 100
