ISEA is advising schoolchildren on how to remain safe while surfing the net and also not to fall prey to fake information. The site says that it is common for students to think that “everything is on the Internet is true” but it is collection of lot of members views as they can write and post without any guidance and control. “The Internet contains a wealth of valuable information but it often is difficult to accessibility, low cost and wide distribution. Internet is a great medium for disseminating falsehoods and inaccuracies,” adds an ISEA advisory for students.
CBSE urged affiliated schools to create awareness about cyber safety and security by gaining access to resource materials from a central government site. The board’s director Biswajit Saha wrote to schools saying “cybercrime is emerging as a major challenge”.

Looking at the growing importance of information security, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITY) has identified this as a critical area. Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) Project was formulated and launched by the Government of India and one of the activities under this programme is to spread information security awareness among children and women, home users, teachers, IT and non-IT professionals throughout the country. Schools can log on to ISEA’s website http://www.isea.gov.in and get all the relevant information.

ISEA cites various reasons for people to be more aware of the dangers that lurk in the cyber world. Their site mentions that “nowadays people of all ages share photos and videos, build online profiles, text, and create avatars. People are adopting new and innovative technologies and spending more time online. Socializing and communicating online can be fulfilling but comes with risks. The threat perception is growing exponentially as the Internet users are increasing in a competitive world”.

As a part of the activity, C-DAC, Hyderabad has been preparing information security awareness material, coordinating with participating institutes like IISc, IITs , NITs, IIITs etc. They are also involved in organizing seminars, workshops, creation & distribution of awareness material to schools and all citizens.
